What outdoor plants can withstand direct sunlight in a planter? - large tree planters

I have 2 large farmers sitting in my path with no plants or trees. I'm trying, twice, and not (ficus twice). Nothing seems to live. I am not a green thumb, or perhaps because my path is west of Miami. Sweltering heat.
Or maybe I've used the wrong kind of dirty.
What types of plants to withstand the highest proportion of direct heat to be?

Something beautiful, and about 5-6 meters high.
I am very concerned that some plants for my house without the 2 points that are full, seems to be empty.
